Our Troop is very active in the community. In additional to the many Eagle Projects our Scouts have completed in the area over the years, we have some community service projects we take part in on a regular basis.
On May 31 each year, our Troop helps the park rangers at the Johnstown Flood National Memorial light the candles inside the luminaries along the pathways near what remains of the dam, and near the visitor center. Each of the 2,209 luminaries is a memorial to a victim of the Great Johnstown Flood of 1889. Students of a local elementary school write the names of the victims on each luminary bag.
Each May before Memorial Day, our Scouts and families help Richland American Legion Post 849 place flags at the graves of veterans in the Richland Township and Geistown areas. We then help to remove the same flags from the graves later in the year, and participate in a retirement ceremony for these flags and other flags that have been given to the Legion for proper retirement.
